National recognition highlights Keller Elementary's literacy success

BrightSpots badge

Keller Elementary School has been recognized as a Bright Spots Top School by The 74, a national education news organization that highlights schools across the country where students are outperforming expectations in reading achievement. The recognition is part of The 74's Bright Spots initiative, which identifies schools that are beating the odds in literacy outcomes.

Keller Elementary was selected as one of the top-performing schools in Washington state based on an analysis comparing third grade reading performance and student poverty rates. Schools recognized through the Bright Spots project have demonstrated literacy results that exceed expectations and serve as examples of effective reading instruction and student support.

"In a school where everyone contributes, we are excited that our hard work and dedication has been recognized through this distinction,” said Keller Principal Savannah Milford. “We are especially grateful to our third grade teachers, whose data is reflected in this report, as well as the teachers who taught before third grade, and the teachers who taught after third grade. We are also thankful to our parent community, who have been partners in our success. Through our collective efforts, our teaching and learning has become stronger. We are proud to see our impact on students' reading recognized on a national level, but we are most proud to say that, despite the odds, our Keller Cobras are readers."

The Bright Spots project examines reading achievement data from schools across the nation to identify those that are achieving exceptional literacy outcomes relative to the populations they serve. The initiative highlights schools where effective instructional practices, strong relationships and a focus on student success are helping children become confident readers.

Lake Washington School District remains committed to each student graduating prepared to lead a rewarding, responsible life as a contributing member of our community and greater society. The district continues to focus on high-quality instruction, evidence-based practices and meaningful support that helps students thrive.
